WHAT IS BEC?

BEC stands for Brisbane Evangelical Church. Evangelical comes from an old word ‘evangel’ which simply means ‘Good News’.   We want BEC to be a ‘good news’ church, a place where YOU…

  • Can find peace, right in the middle of life’s difficulties.
  • Are made to feel welcome.
  • Can experience the ultimate good news – that God loves you!

Although we have good facilities in School Street, Largs, BEC (the church) is not made up of bricks and mortar.  The church is the people.  So you are just as likely to meet the church in the local post office, at the bus stop, or walking along the prom through the week, as you are for a few minutes on a Sunday in the church building.

WHO DOES WHAT?

At BEC we have a group of leaders who help make decisions on behalf of church members. The leadership team is made up of a pastor Ian Dickie and others who are known as elders and deacons (See Our Leadership Team page). The pastor’s role is to be responsible for the spiritual direction of the church. This involves things like teaching from the Bible at the services, which he often leads. He prays for the church members and encourages them to grow in their own spiritual journey, as well as caring for the many needs of the community. This is a big task, and so he is assisted by the elders. These are people chosen because of their wisdom, compassion and trustworthiness. They support the pastor in maintaining the spiritual direction of the church, and also in caring for its needs.

WHO GOES TO BEC?

All sorts of people attend the church, from all walks of life.  Church is pretty amazing in that aspect.  Where else do you have babies, toddlers, children, teens, adults, older people and everyone in-between gathering together regularly?  When we come together we gather under the authority of the name of Jesus Christ.  The Bible describes His love for us as being like a large banner.  When we come to church, with different experiences and personalities, we find we have more that unites us than divides us.  We discover a unity that Jesus alone can bring.

A wise man once said the church is the only organisation that exists for the benefit of it’s non-members’.  So at BEC, we try to live our lives selflessly, looking out for the needs of our neighbours and community.

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE?
The ‘good news’ that we want everyone in Largs to know about is found in God’s Word, The Bible.  In it’s pages we discover that God created the world with a plan.  And when He made it, it was perfect.  But then men and women got involved, and that’s when things started to go wrong. They did wrong and God’s perfect plan was corrupted by something the bible calls, sin.  This basically describes anything that is counter to God’s perfect blueprint.  God could have destroyed the project and started over. Instead He provided the solution to take away the sin of humanity. The sacrifice, amazingly, was His own Son. You may have heard of Him – Jesus.

At BEC, Jesus is worshipped and loved. Because of His death on a cross 2000 years ago, we believe that we can be forgiven and find freedom. Our church logo says we can all have ‘new life in Jesus Christ’.  This is the best news we’ve ever heard!

WHAT HAPPENS AT BEC?

There’s always a lot going on at BEC, and there’s something for everyone!  Church is not just about Sundays – through the week there is a wide range of activities.  The details are always displayed on the noticeboard outside the building as well as regular services at www.beclargs.org/meetings

Please note that several local community groups also regularly use the church facilities.  For more details please see Local Community Groups or email the Church Office.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

The days of men wearing three-piece suits and ladies wearing fancy big hats to come to church have largely gone. People used to talk about ‘Sunday best’. The truth is there are likely more rules on what you wear to your local nightclub or golf club than there are for coming to church, at least for BEC! Our advice is simply: ‘Come as you are.’

There’s a verse in the Bible that says ‘People look on the outside but God looks on the heart’ (1 Sam 16:7).  At BEC we believe it’s far more important to attend to what is happening on the inside of a person than it is to be concerned about labels and appearances.  Bring your worries, your doubts, your questions and your hang- ups and allow us to introduce you to a God who knows you and loves you!
